Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Health Science Careers student Madison Russell recently won second place in the state in a Healthy Lifestyle competition at the 2023 New York State HOSA-Future Health Professionals Spring Leadership Conference.
A total of eight Herkimer BOCES Health Science Careers students attended the conference with Health Science Careers instructor Christe Zambri and participated in events including Health Career Display, Community Awareness and Healthy Lifestyle.
“Our students work so hard in class all year, and the HOSA conference was a great way for them to show the skills they have been learning,” Zambri said. “I’m very proud of them.”
The 2023 New York State HOSA Spring Leadership Conference took place from March 21-23 at the Double Tree by Hilton in Syracuse. HOSA, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America, describes itself as “a global student-led organization, whose mission is to promote career opportunities in the health industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.”
In addition to Russell, a Central Valley junior, the other Herkimer BOCES Health Science Careers students who attended the conference were Little Falls senior Madison Chapman, Little Falls junior Mya Crisell, Central Valley junior Taylor Dicob, Central Valley senior Caitlyn Fuller, West Canada Valley senior Lindsay Pierson, Little Falls junior Gia Reyes and Frankfort-Schuyler senior Mathew Vannort. Students practiced for the HOSA conference during the school year – including Russell and Dicob practicing for the Community Awareness competition by presenting to Central Valley Academy students in early March about the health risks of vaping.
