Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Safety Services are hosting several professional development opportunities in May that are open to all – both local school staff and the general public.

All training sessions will take place at the Herkimer BOCES Gateway Center on the second floor of the Arc Herkimer building at 420 E. German St. in Herkimer.

The following is a list of the professional development opportunities with their date, cost and other details:

SafeTALK: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 5. This training is free. It is a three-hour training to help identify and connect individuals at risk of suicide with support. 

Youth Mental Health First Aid: 8:30 a.m. to noon on May 12 and May 20. This two-day training course is $60. Attendees will learn to identify and respond to mental health challenges in youth. You must attend both days for credit. It also includes a required online portion.

DASA Six-Hour Certification Course: 3-6 p.m. on May 14. This training is free for staff of Herkimer BOCES and component districts that subscribe to the Dignity for All Students Act services. It is $90 for all others. This course is for anyone pursuing a new DASA certification. All are trained in preventing and intervening in bullying, harassment, discrimination and intimidation. The six-hour class will consist of two portions. The first three hours are offered online, self-paced through Google Classroom, and then the in-person portion is May 14.

Suicide Safety for Teachers and School Staff: 1-2:30 p.m. on May 20. This training is free. Attendees will learn about school suicide prevention, warning signs, referral procedures and enhancing protective factors.
