VP-TECH special education resource teacher Nathan Purinton recently joined VP-TECH social studies teacher Rachel Kent to co-teach a lesson on the Civil War.
VP-TECH U.S. History 111 students are creating a virtual exhibit on the U.S. Civil War and needed an expert to come in to inspire the class and explain how to think like a historian, Kent said. Providing context to material culture is crucial, she said.
Purinton brought in items belonging to his distant family member, George Washington Flagg, a Union Calvary soldier. Items included: musket balls and a powder horn for a pistol, a mini ball sharps carbine, uniform items and metals, gunpowder, a war bond and a “Lincoln assassination bill.”
Students investigated the historical artifacts and attempted to identify and provide context to them (based on previous knowledge and classroom discussion). Purinton assisted students in their assessments and was able to provide meaning and the stories behind them.
The experience generated numerous excited lines of inquiry and on the spot research and learning. This experience gave students an opportunity to learn the importance of annotating material items but also to practice the skills needed to apply in their own Civil War exhibits, Kent said.
