About the Power Sports & Agricultural Mechanics program:

This nationally accredited program encompasses aspects of turf, agriculture, and sport equipment repair. Through classroom theory and lab practice, students utilize the latest industry standards and equipment. Students attend dealer update schools and have the opportunity to compete in contests offered at participating colleges. They also have the opportunity to earn a technical endorsement on their high school diploma as well as national certification through the Equipment and Engine Training Council. This program prepares the student to continue their education at college or to enter the workforce as an entry-level technician.

In the Power Sports and Agricultural Mechanics program, students will learn:

  • Rebuilding small engines and outdoor power equipment

  • Diagnostics of small engines and related equipment

  • Retrieving information from service manuals

  • Calculating the cost of the repair

  • Diagnosing and repairing components on recreation vehicles

  • Dismounting and mounting tires

  • Measuring wheelbase & track on recreational vehicles to enhance performance

This course will train students in the basics of repairing small engines, outdoor equipment and power sport vehicles.

First Year:

Students will learn the components and systems that make up a small engine. Students will learn four-stroke & two-stroke engine operation, maintenance procedures, diagnostics and repair. Throughout the year, students will troubleshoot and rebuild various small engines and outdoor equipment. While the year progresses, students have the opportunity to earn online certifications through the Briggs and Stratton Corp. technician training course. Briggs & Stratton Corp. requires all its service technicians nationwide to complete these exams.

Second Year:

Students will be introduced to power sports and will learn about different types of power sports vehicles, which include dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles. They will also learn about agricultural repair which includes farm equipment, tractors and hydraulic systems. They will learn about the components and systems that make up each vehicle. This program will cover preventative maintenance procedures, tire mounting, brake service and chassis/ suspension geometry. In both years of the program, students will learn how manufacturers of both small engine and recreational vehicles are introducing “green/clean” alternative fuels to their product lines. Students will use the same technology the dealers use to repair various types of equipment in their repair facilities.

Outcomes:

Students can focus on a career skill in this industry for positions that are in high demand. Students can prepare to enter the work force as an entry level-technician, start their own business or continue onto college with a head start through our articulation agreements with SUNY Morrisville and SUNY Cobleskill.
